DELTA 2023: A CASE FOR A TECHNOCRAT AS GOVERNOR – UCHE OKORO

DELTA 2023: A CASE FOR A TECHNOCRAT AS GOVERNOR - UCHE OKORO

Since the return of democracy in 1999, only politicians have been elected as Governors to lead the people of Delta State.

Though, Delta State is blessed with abundant natural and human resources, multiple sources have rated the performances of these politicians below average.

And in the last six years, Nigeria has slipped into recession and depression severally and the Federal allocations to States have dwindled. It is convenient to conclude here that this state is in a serious crisis.

So, it is not out of place to give a technocrat (defined here as a top Civil Servant) a chance to bring his/her immense knowledge and technical expertise to develop the State.

The call for a technocrat as Governor of Delta State in 2023 is hinged on the belief that the father of technocracy Thorstein Veblen believed that technological developments would be a precursor to a socialistic organisation of economic affairs.

After first world war in America, technocrats were called upon to play a key role in helping the economy heal from the effects of the crisis during the Great Depression in the early 1930s.

The new deal comprised a series of public work reforms and financial reforms that President Roosevelt introduced between 1933 and 1939 to help the economy recover from the Great Depression.

Technocrats, the world over, are appointed or elected to hold office based on their expertise in a given field of knowledge. Today Delta State is in dire need of a technocrat to massively develop the State with quality infrastructure, industries where the youths can be employed, traditional rulers participation in government, State Police, affordable housing, quality education, portable water, good hospitals, clean markets, functional motor parks, massive rural development, a crime free environment and rural and urban electrification.

Again, these beautiful things mentioned above can perfectly take place only if a technocrat with the political will is elected as Governor to deliberately put the State on the path of development.

Everyone is tired of the traditional democracy, where leaders are elected to office based on god-fatherism and party affiliation. It is time to think above that old-fashioned ideology and search for a technocrat with a proven performance and relevant skills in his/her field of expertise, rather than hand-picking a politician based on his/her political affiliation and connection.

Besides, one very important characteristics of a technocrat, is that he/she will make developmental decisions that focus on scientific and technical principles.

Deltans, the time is now.
