MEET DR EMMANUEL BIRI – ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MASS COMMUNICATION AND JOURNALISM, DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY, ABRAKA.
Dr. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri is an Associate Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism and the Director, Pre-Degree Programme of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Nigeria.
He was the former Head of Department, Mass Communication and the Associate Dean of Students’ Affairs of the same University. During his tenure as the Head of Department, he established the MS.c and Ph.D progammes in Mass Communication.
He helped to secure a broadcast license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for the Department’s FM radio station. During his tenure, the Department produced the first set of First Class graduates.
For the four year he served as the Head of Department, the Department produced six first class graduates and one them became the Best Overall Graduating Student in the University. The State Governor, Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, subsequently gave him an automatic employment as a Graduate Assistant in the Mass Communication Department.
Dr. Ufuophu-Biri is an accomplished communication practitioner and specialist. He holds a PhD in Communication Arts, University of Ibadan, Ibadan; MA (Distinction) Mass Communication, University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR); and B.A (Hons) Mass Communication, both from DELSU, Abraka; Advanced Diploma and Diploma in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos; Certificate in Television and Film Production from NTA Headquarters, Lagos; and Certificate in Digital Humanities, Brown University, Rhode Island, Providence, USA.
In 2009 he was awarded the Broadcast Lecturer in Africa by the USA Government through the US Department of State under the International Visitors’ Leadership Program (IVLP) where he spent good time in USA and interacted with wide range of people and officials from the White House, Department of State, the Pentagon, the mass media, universities, civil societies, among others.
He is a pioneer Fellow and Alumnus of the Brown University International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI), Rhode Island, Providence, USA where he also spent a good time in the US.
Dr. Ufuophu-Biri has delivered lectures in several places including Harvard University, USA, University of Memphis, USA, University of South Florida, USA, and University of Abertay, Dundee Scotland and British Universities TV and Video Council, London and other places such as Ghana, Kenya, UAE, Israel, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
He is a dedicated and strong labour union leader and believes in the welfare of the workers. For instance, he is the Secretary, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), DELSU Branch as well as Assistant Secretary, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council and National President, Delta State University Alumni Association.
He is social critic and social commentator. His comments and press statements on public affairs are regularly published and broadcast in the mass media. He is also a regular guest lecturer in different fora.
He holds tens of international and national awards and Fellowships among which include the Most Productive Head of Department in DELSU, 2017 with a cash prize of N100, 000 from the University; the Academic Personality in Delta State in 2017 by the African Child Foundation; the Most ICT Initiative Head of Department and the Best Lecturer awarded by the DELSU Students Body in 2016 and 2015 respectively; the Most Hard Working Young Lecturer in Nigeria by the Junior Chamber International in Abeokuta (2006) and Worthy DELSU Alumnus by the African Child Foundation in 2006. He also won the Head of Department Award for the Best Graduating Student in 1998.
Dr. Ufuophu-Biri is a member of the Governing Council of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe – Oghara, Delta State. He has served as a visiting lecturer to several institutions including Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwash – Uku, Benson Idahosa University, Benin City and University of Benin, Benin City. He is an external examiner to Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, South Africa, Benson Idahosa University, Benin City and Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State.
He was a member of the Delta State University Examination Committee from 2001 to 2015. He was also a member of the State Examination Monitoring Committee as well as member of the National Examination Malpractice Marshall. In 2005, he was given the Meritorious Award for his Fight against Examination Malpractice by the Delta Government. Same year, the Senate of the Delta State University gave him Commendation Letter for his fight against Examination Malpractice. In 1998 and 1999, the two different Vice Chancellors of the Delta State University gave him two different commendations for his war against cult activities and deviance in the University.
He led the DELSU Team to National Universities Film and Television Competition in Sheraton Hotel, Abuja where the DELSU Team won twice in two different years as the Best Film Producing University in Nigeria. He has significant interest in film, music and comedy production. He is also a great stand – up comedian.
His comedy skits are in Youtube and Facebook. His has just released his first music single “Covid 19 – Keep to the rules” in April, 2020. He has served as Master of Ceremony in over 200 different ceremonies across Nigeria, USA and the Middle East. He has mentored several renowned and upcoming comedians and movie artistes in Nigeria.
DR BIRI is one of the trainers at the workshop, a capacity building and intellectual brain storming exercise for media aides, government spokespersons, Journalists, media partners and social/new media influencers/bloggers.
