The name Chief (Hon) Barr. Andrew Orugbo is a house hold name in the politics of Delta State. Chief Orugbo is a lawyer with over 30 years’ experience in the Bar.
An academician, a very strong political character, a leader, grassroot mobiliser, an empowerment guru, defender and lover of his people. Gentle, bold, courageous, sagacious, and intellectually rugged. He remains one of our finest political materials or assets in Delta State.
Born on 15th August,1960 to the Ogbe Family of Ogbe- Udu and Esekairoro Family of Emadadja both of Udu LGA and Married to Anthonia Evuarhenrhen of Ubogo Town. He hold a chieftaincy title as the Udugba of Udu Kingdom.
Upon his graduation from the University of Lagos and the Nigerian Law School in Lagos in 1987, 1988 and NYSC program in 1989 respectively,Orugbo started Private Legal Practice having been called to Bar. He remains the Principal @ ESEKAIRORO CHAMBERS ,a Law Firm which has rendered free Legal Services to numerous Udu sons and daughters and Nigerians at large.
Chief Orugbo’s political history is traceable to the time of NRC and SDP where he served as the Secretary of SDP in the whole of Okpe LGA. He was the chairmanship and House of Assembly Candidate of GDM respectively.
In 1999, Chief Orugbo contested for Chairmanship of the Udu Local Government Council under APP and won to become the Executive Chairman of Udu L.G.Council . Under his administration, he employed several Udu children into the Local Government Service as L.G.workers.He built what you have today as Udu Council Secretariat, he built the Udu Market or Udu Garage, he constructed the Orhuwhorun Roundabout, he also constructed Toilets in Enerhen Community, he established and built Primary Health Centers at Ovwian, Emadadja, Ogbe -Udu, Aladja ,Opete Communities etc.
Chief Orugbo as a Council Chairman also established 4 Secondary Schools in Udu LGA,namely Adadja Secondary School, Emadadja, Oghior Comprehensive High School, Oghior, Otor-Udu Secondary School, Otor-Udu and Ogbe-Udu Secondary School, Ogbe -Udu and financed them and facilitated their takeover by Delta State Government.
As a Council Chairman, Chief Orugbo stood firm and mobilize Udu people against the cessation of Enerhen an Udu Community to Uvwie LGA,and that was the last time we heard of the Enerhen boundary adjustment issue by Udu LGC chairman. Chief Orugbo fought SPDC as a Council chairman to ensure that the revenue accruable from the Utorogun Gas Plants was shared equally between Ughelli South and Udu LGAs in farness.
Owing to his performance as LGA chairman and his GDM connection, Chief Orugbo got the nod of H.E. Chief James Onanefe Ibori to service under his administration and Orugbo was appointed as Commissioner For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and a member of the Delta State Executive Council. Orugbo brought life into that Ministry, in his time there was nothing like deduction from the Local Government Salaries, the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council was overhauled, the Urhobo Kings that were denied membership were made members of the Council, e.g, Agbarha Warri King, Okere Urhobo Warri King,etc, he also made an Urhobo king the late Ogumerime the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom the Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council etc.
Orugbo also resolved the Okpe Kingship tussle and facilitated the installation of the current Orodje Of Okpe Kingdom. General Emujakporuo who later conferred Orugbo with one of the highest chieftaincy titles in Okpe as an Okakuro. As a Commissioner For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Orugbo also influenced the construction of Old Ekete Road, Owhase Main Road, New York Street, Boro Street, Batete Street and Cele Road.
He also ensured that Ekiagbon or Aladja Water Side Road was constructed but there was logistics problems and other unforseen human factors which later hurt the project.Orugbo also employed Udu sons and daughters into the State Civil Service Commission.
Overwhelmed by his performance, Chief Ibori embarked on minor Cabinet reshuffle and moved Orugbo to Ministry of Justice as Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner For Justice in Delta State where Orugbo brought his wealth of experience to bare as a legal icon. There in the Ministry of Justice, brought sanity and true justice to play, he brought a high Court to Udu and appointed several Udu children as Justices of the Peace, JPs.
Not satisfied with the service to humanity, Orugbo contested for House of Representatives under UDP a party he brought from Abuja in 2011.He was also the Candidate of APC for House of Representatives in 2015 in search of platform to serve his people.
Today, Chief Andrew Orugbo is set to go back to PDP where his political mates are. In the words of Chief Efe Olowo Gaddafi, “those who caused the exit of Orugbo from APC will meet their Waterloo”
