Ahead of the PDP primary elections scheduled for December 23, 2020, Hon. Ese Onota, Coordinator of Udu South Assembly, a political pressure group of the political elite from the wards in the southern part of Udu LGA of Delta State has declared that it would be unfair, insensitive outrage and act of cheer disregard for the people of Udu south for the position of council chairman to be retained in Udu North, urging the party leadership to listen to the voice of reason and allow Udu South produce the next council chairman.
Addressing newsmen in Ovwian shortly after the release of the PDP timetable for conduct to the party primaries ahead of the March 6, 2021 local government council elections in Delta State, Hon. Onota disclosed that all the odds were in favour of Udu South to produce the next chairman of the council.
“The people from the five wards of Udu south comprising of Ward one, and two, three, four and eight have been shortchanged for too long in the affairs of Udu.
The next council polls will determine whether Udu south will still have a stake in Udu or not.
All the wards in Udu are co-equal and should be treated fairly. In 2017 when the incumbent chairman was campaigning, he told the immediate past Chairman in clear terms that Udu does not allow second term for anybody. Why would he now turn around to be seeking another term when he knew quite well that since the council was created in 1996, nobody has been voted twice”, Onota queried.
“The Udu South Assembly are determined to see this project to the end. We have been shortchanged for too long in the politics of Udu.
Udu North and South have five wards each, yet since 2003, Udu North has held on to the position of House of Assembly.
We are not complaining about that because it is a product of real contest. But for the position of Council Chairman which is the prerogative of the incumbent Governor, it has been moving between Udu north and south.
Chief Sakpra from Udu North handed over to Chief Solomon Kpomah from Udu South who in turn handed over to Chief Jite Borwn from Udu north. Even when Jite Brown was coming in 2017, Udu decided to retain the Chairman in Udu south by endorsing a southern candidate because the House of Assembly was still in Udu North.
What Udu will never accept is to retain the incumbent for a second tenure. This most not be, he declared.
Hon. Onota explained further that since the creation of Udu Local Government Council in 1996, “Of the six elected Council Chairman so far, four are from Udu North and only two are from Udu South hence the clamor of the Udu South Assembly to ensure Udu south produce the next council chairman in the name of equity.
Hon Chief Jite Brown iS from Udu North. I have nothing personal against him but let the truth be told, nobody has been voted twice into the office of executive chairman of Udu local government council since creation.
