Upu Launches Urhobo Cultural Center In Rivers Dec 5

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), River State branch will launch its cultural Centre, Port Harcourt on Saturday, December 5, 2020, just as the traditional ruler of Oghara Kingdom, HRM Noble Etsemitan commended the selfless effort of the River State UPU executives for imitating the project.

A statement signed by Chief Felibens Okoro and Mr. Isaac Akpoyibo, the president and secretary of UPU Rivers State branch, noted that the theme of the event is the Urhobo’s finding their proper place in modern day Nigeria, adding that, it would hold at the De Millennium event Centre, km 2, Igbo Etche Road, Rumukwurusi Port Harcourt by 10am.

The statement said: “We the Urhobo community Rivers State under the backings of the UPU, River State wish to appeal to prominent Urhobo sons and daughters to help us sponsor the completion of the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Port Harcourt.

This idea of the Cultural Centre was necessitated by the sufferings the Urhobo people in Rivers State encountered in having a befitting place to meet over the years.”


“The struggle to have a place started over twenty-five years ago and we have not been able to complete it till date.

We acquired a land in a prime location along the East-West Road, Port- Harcourt. To date, we have organized fund raising programmes so as to complete the project.”

“After several years, our effort have seen the house up to roofing level and now we need urgent assistance to continue the structure to completion.

The Cultural Centre, Port Harcourt will serve all Urhobo in and around Rivers State and visitors from other State when completed.”

They disclosed that the Urhobo Cultural Centre will have a large hall that can accommodate over 750 people, an Urhobo food restaurant, meeting rooms, guest rooms, offices, shops where Urhobo traditional attire can be purchased and a library where the children and other people can read about the Urhobo people.

According to them: “The Urhobo Cultural Centre will equally serve as a skill acquisition Centre where the Urhobo people will learn entrepreneur and personal development skills that will help them to be self-reliant.”


They added: “The pending aspects of the completion process of the Urhobo Cultural Centre include preparing the house for roofing, provision and installation of steel roof structure, long span roofing sheets, windows and doors, ceiling structure, completion of electrical works, tiling works, plumbing work, rendering, screed and painting, land scrapping of the premises and commissioning.”

The eminent personalities that will grace the colorful event are Governor of Rivers State, Chief (Barr) Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, special guest of honour, Olorogun Dr. Moses Taiga, President General (PG) of UPU worldwide, guest of honour, HRM (Orefe 111), Nobel Etsemitan (the ovie of Oghara kingdom), father of the day and Chief (Sir) D.O Ovueraye KSM, MD De Millennium Event Centre.
