Following opposition criticisms on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with a controversial comparison with US Vice President Mike Pence, Nigerians on social media have come out in defence of the Vice President.
Many Nigerians on social media have noted that this has never been the case in Nigeria under President Buhari. They added that the comparison between Pence’s action and Trump and Yemi Osinbajo in relation to Buhari was partisan and not based on facts, especially as the issue was based on allegiance to the US constitution and not personal biases or loyalty to a person.
This comes as US VP Pence on Wednesday publicly broke with President Donald Trump, saying he cannot submit to Trump’s demands for him to overthrow the results of the 2020 US election after Joe Biden won more popular and electoral college votes than Trump. On Thursday, the US Electoral College also confirmed Biden as the winner of the US presidential election.
They noted that it was Yemi Osinbajo (then as Acting President) who sacked the former Director General, State Security Service, Lawal Daura, when he violated the sanctity of the National Assembly. VP Yemi had then described the unauthorised takeover of the National Assembly complex “as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.”
Also, others pointed to Yemi Osinbajo’s direct role in ensuring that the Federal Government meet the demands arising from the EndSARS protests, including the disbandment of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery squad unit (SARS) and the establishment of judicial panels to prosecute police brutality and ensure justice for victims.
Nigerians further noted that there is no comparison with Pence’s action as Yemi Osinbajo has been the most active and selfless VP in Nigeria’s history, owing to the continuous efforts he is shown in the discharge of his duties as Nigeria’s number two citizen.
