FLOOD PROJECT FLAGGED OFF AT ANWAI RIVER, ASABA

Learn about the flood project aimed at protecting Delta State communities from the impact of flooding and ensuring safety.

A flood mitigation project has been officially launched at the Anwai River in Asaba, on the 29th of July, 2025. This flood project is crucial for the region.

Speaking at the site, a representative from the state government expressed gratitude to God and praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He praised the governor for his efforts to reduce the effects of flooding across Delta State. Moreover, he described the governor as a leader who is deeply intentional about the well-being of all Deltans. The governor’s leadership in the flood project has gained acknowledgment.

“Delta is a coastal state with several areas situated below sea level, making it vulnerable to flooding. But Governor Oborevwori, even during his presidential campaign, made a promise to protect the environment and ensure the safety of our communities,” he said.

He explained that the Anwai River serves as a major collecting point for water across Asaba before it flows into the River Niger. With the new intervention, water channels are being constructed to ensure a free flow of water. This will prevent floods from chasing people out of their homes, a major aim of the flood project.

“We are also clearing other blocked drainage channels to protect residents from displacement caused by water overflow,” he added as part of the overall flood project efforts.

The government also issued a strong warning to residents who dump refuse in drainage systems. According to the official, anyone caught engaging in such acts will face serious punishment.

Highlighting that Asaba has a storm water project, they’ve successfully completed six out of eight phases of the project. Furthermore, the governor has promised environmental stability and approved the other two phases to align with the ongoing flood project.

“By the end of this project, flood will be a thing of the past in Asaba and its environs,” he assured.

He concluded by saying they are open to collaboration to build a more sustainable in Delta State.
