Omo-Agege focuses on reclaiming the Delta Central Senate seat while dismissing rumors of a governorship run.
Olorogun Godwin Obire PhD is the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Political Matters. He is also the Chairman of the Concerned Nigerians for Better Nigeria (CNBN). He has dismissed speculations about former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. There are rumors that he is plotting another governorship contest in Delta State.
Obire spoke with journalists in Asaba on Tuesday. He said all indications point to Omo-Agege’s interest in reclaiming the Delta Central Senate seat. Senator Ede Dafinone currently occupies this seat. Agege is more interested in this than in contesting the 2027 governorship election.
“Let’s be clear, Omo-Agege will not run for governor. His target is Ede Dafinone’s Senate seat, but he wants it delivered to him on a platter of gold.
“He knows he cannot challenge Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori in the governorship race because the political calculations and indices are totally against him,” Obire stated.
According to him, Omo-Agege’s recent political maneuvers included solidarity marches and media campaigns. These were simply “negotiating tactics” to make his return to the Senate easier.
He argued that Omo-Agege’s decision was a costly mistake. Omo-Agege chose to abandon his Senate seat. He did this in pursuit of the governorship in 2023.
“Had he held onto that seat, he could have easily risen to Senate President today. Blinded by over-ambition, he forced his way into the governorship race. He was soundly defeated and managed to win only four out of 25 local governments,” Obire said.
On the performance of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor’s aide stressed that the administration’s achievements were evident. He noted that the governor had never discouraged anyone from contesting against him.
“As a true democrat, Governor Oborevwori believes in open competition and fair party primaries. Most importantly, his record in office speaks for itself.
“Omo-Agege has performed excellently well. I strongly believe the people are wise enough not to abandon proven leadership for empty promises,” he added.
