President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday in Lagos commended the critical role of governors in driving Nigeria’s development. He emphasized their leadership at the local level. This is crucial to achieving food security, economic prosperity, and rapid growth in the country.

President Tinubu spoke at a New Year’s reception. Vice President Kasim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) hosted it at his official residence in Ikoyi. He thanked them for their support and cooperation. He urged for joint efforts to achieve progress in the country.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s development and prosperity. The federal government accounts for  30 to 35 percent of the funds allocated; the rest is yours. The agricultural value chain is yours.” The land is yours, the work is in your hands,” he said.

President Tinubu called for greater collaboration between the federal and state governments. This collaboration aims to address major challenges, including local government autonomy, agricultural productivity, and financial stability.

The president expressed his commitment to development and local government autonomy. He emphasized the importance of the country’s development. He also rejected any divisive rhetoric with governors.

“We are not fighting each other. I am pushing for change. You run the local government. By truly meeting the expectations of the Indigenous community we will regain hope.

“There are rumors that we have differences in terms of local government autonomy. No. We should only encourage the development of local government. No one wants to take that away from us. you, but we must work together.” Let us work together to make Nigeria a better place.

President Tinubu urged the governors to make agricultural growth a path to economic stability.

“We must work harder, grow more and improve our financial situation. “Nigeria will gain, but we must all work together,” he said.

He also urged the governors to be proud of their achievements and recognize the progress they have made in their states:

“There is no country that we cannot visit and be proud of its development. We are now better off. Let me take the blame; You are a blessing. Together we will build a country that we can be proud of.

The President reflected on his leadership over the past 19 months. He said he was confident that Nigeria could succeed. This success would be driven by the energy and leadership shown by the government.

“I am very happy that I applied for this job and that Nigeria has given me this job. Let us embark on this journey together. “I thank you all  for bringing us to where we are today and our future aspirations,” he said.

The President announced that he would visit Enugu State on January 4. This visit is part of his plan to visit some countries in the group.

President Tinubu accepted his selection as TODAY’s Person of the Year.

He commended the paper for recognizing that “what they initially considered a failure has now become a success.”

Abdulrahman Abdulrazak is the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State. He noted that ThisDay’s choice of President Tinubu as Person of the Year strongly endorses the government’s policy.

He said the support from the media, known for its critical coverage during the campaign period, shows significant progress. This progress is made under President Tinubu’s leadership. “This policy is a success. I am in Jigawa, which is in the agricultural sector.

The complaint in Jigawa is the harvest, but because we have a strong economy, traders export the produce. “So most of us are forcing ourselves to buy things for emergencies. So in terms of agriculture, this policy is working. We will continue to deepen this work. Our goal is to ensure 100% food security and nutrition for all of West Africa,” he said.

The governor urged the president to visit the government and see the changes and progress that have been made.

He assured the President of the governors’ unwavering support. They are especially focused on contributing to the regional security architecture. This contribution aims to strengthen national security.

“I must admit I have been in this government for less than two years. But, I have completed more projects in two years. I completed more than I did in the four years of my first term,” said Governor Abdulrazaq.

“With the economic reforms, more funds have been received. Yes, there is an increase, but we can overcome it,” said the governor.
