The recent incident that happened in Anambra State, where a youth corper was stripped naked by a vigilante group. Meanwhile, this incident has triggered public anger and which has led to lots of questions about the abuse.
A young corper left home to serve her country, Nigeria. Being dehumanized in such a cruel manner should trouble the minds of every Nigerian. No matter the offense, no Nigerian deserves such humiliation. This is especially true when it happens at the hands of those meant to protect the community. Justice must be done through the right procedures.
The supervisor of Agunechemba Administrative Headquarters condemned the act. He said, “It is a shameful show of lawlessness.” He warned that vigilante groups are assistants to lawful authorities.
In my view, this incident should not be swept aside with a casual apology. It demands serious accountability. Nonetheless, the Anambra state government and the NYSC leaders must guarantee that those responsible face serious consequences.
Nigerian people are already carrying the burden of unemployment, insecurity, and broken families. But the least that can be done is to protect them during their Youth Service.
The youth corper in Anambra deserves justice. But beyond that Nigeria deserves a system where dignity is not negotiable.
