ABIA STATE INTRODUES ABIA CONNECT CARD FOR CASHLESS GREEN SHUTTLE BUS PAYMENTS

Abia State

Abia State has officially introduced the Abia Connect Card, a new cashless payment system designed for commuters using the Green Shuttle Bus Service. The initiative marks a major step toward digitising public transportation and reducing the use of physical cash across the state’s transit network.

The launch, backed by the administration of Alex Otti, is part of broader reforms aimed at improving accountability, efficiency, and service delivery in the transport sector. With the new system, passengers are required to tap their Abia Connect Card on designated payment terminals when boarding any Green Shuttle bus operating within Abia State.

Government officials say the move will help curb revenue leakages, speed up boarding times, and ensure a more transparent fare collection process. The card system also allows commuters to load funds electronically, making transactions seamless and eliminating the need for drivers or conductors to handle cash.

The first batch of the Abia Connect Card is reportedly being distributed free of charge, although commuters are expected to top up their cards with a minimum balance before use. Registration requires the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN), while residents without one are encouraged to enrol through the appropriate state platforms.

The cashless system applies to both intra-city and inter-city Green Shuttle routes, covering major corridors such as Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. Authorities believe the initiative will not only modernise public transport but also lay the groundwork for future digital services across other sectors in the state.

With the introduction of the Abia Connect Card, Abia joins the growing list of Nigerian states adopting technology-driven solutions to enhance urban mobility and public service efficiency.
