Professor Omafume Onoge and Onigu Otite confirmed that Okpe is one of the dialects of Urhobo, stating that what distinguishes Okpe from Urhobo is that it has Dukes who assist the Orodje to oversee its various districts.
Another Speaker explained that the father of Okpe people was buried in Okpe-Olomu. That, he said, is proof that Okpe’s roots are Urhobo.
They also reminded people of the historical fact that Orerokpe(in Okpe land) was once the former headquarters for Western Urhobo and that Okpe leaders have worked closely with the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU).
He added that famous people from Okpe like Professor Sam Oyobaire, General Patrick Aziza, Barrister Isaac, Itebu, and Mrs. Amioku have played important roles in the UPU. If Okpe were not Urhobo, they said, these people would not be accepted in Urhobo matters.
Briefly, Okakuiro Robert Onome, the President General of the OKpe Union Worldwide, said those trying to say Okpe is not Urhobo do not speak for the Orodje.
Also speaking, comrade Charles Odiete, President of Okpe Youth Council (OYC), added. We are born as Urhobos. “We are known as Urhobos. That is the truth, and nobody should change it.”
The Leaders called on everyone to stay united and ignore those trying to cause division.
