Learn about the memorable Esakpigodi ceremony in Oginibo in 1976, celebrating generations of mothers and cultural heritage.
The picture above shows (L to R) my mother, Theresa, and me. We are with my cousin Augustina, and her mother, Patience. This was during our Esakpigodi ceremony in Oginibo in 1976.
Robogbevwe was the mother of Avworu. Avworu gave birth to Djeikpewhre. Djeikpewhre was the mother of Siobirhereh (Theresa) who gave birth to me 21st May 1966. All four generations of my mother’s family were alive when I was born. Consequently Augustina & I were Esakpigodi. Ogbighele. Ovie. Ovie Re Nene. Robogbevwe died after Augustina was born, later in the sixties, but somehow our Parents delayed the ceremony till 1976.
I can’t forget that ceremony that lasted about two weeks with all the pampering, singing, dancing, eating, visits to markets, traditional dressing etc
