URHOBO YOUTHS REFLECT ON CHIEF MUKORO MOWOE

Urhobo youths reflect on Chief Mukoro Mowoe’s legacy in a memorable event aimed at developing leadership skills.

The Urhobo youths held an event to remember one of their greatest leaders, Chief Mukoro Mowoe, 77 years after his death.

The Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) organised the event. It brought together Urhobo students, scholars, and community Leaders to reflect on the life and legacy of Chief Mowoe.

One of the major highlights was a youth debate. Students from Urhobo College, Effurun, and Government College, Ughelli, discussed the topic: “The Nigerian Structure, Not Urhobo Leadership, is to Blame for Urhobo Underdevelopment.” The aim was to help young people think critically about the challenges facing the Urhobo Nation and to develop their leadership skills.

During the event, a book titled “Community and Self-Reliance: The Philosophy of Development of Mukoro Mowoe” was unveiled.

Chief Mowoe led the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) from 1937 to 1948 and was a lawmaker in the Western Region House of Assembly between 1946 and 1948. He is widely remembered for standing strong for Urhobo rights in the 20th century.

The UHS said the event was more than just a memorial, but a time for reflection, intellectual engagement, and to learn.
