Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested ₦873 billion to conduct the 2027 general elections, while also proposing a ₦171 billion operational budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
The proposal was presented before the National Assembly during a budget defence session. During this session, INEC officials explained that the 2027 election fund is separate from its routine annual operations.
₦873BN FOR 2027 GENERAL ELECTIONS
INEC said the projected ₦873.7 billion will cover logistics, personnel training, election materials, technology upgrades, transportation, security coordination, and other nationwide operational expenses.
The commission cited inflation, exchange rate pressures, expansion of polling units, and technological improvements as key reasons for the increased projected cost compared to previous elections.
The 2027 polls will include presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly elections across Nigeria.
Apart from the election budget, INEC proposed ₦171 billion for its 2026 operations. The budget is expected to cover:
- Staff salaries and allowances
- Overhead expenses
- Maintenance of electoral equipment
- By-elections and off-cycle governorship elections
- Continuous voter registration and voter education
However, the proposed ₦171 billion reportedly exceeds the ₦140 billion budget ceiling set by the Ministry of Finance.
Lawmakers raised questions about the rising cost of elections and discussed funding mechanisms to ensure proper planning ahead of 2027. Some members reportedly suggested reforms to improve efficiency and transparency.
The proposal is expected to generate nationwide debate as Nigeria continues to navigate economic challenges.
