Police operatives in Cross River State have uncovered an illegal mortuary facility.
The Police recovered eight decomposed bodies which sent shockwaves across the community. It also raised fresh concerns about unregulated burial practices in parts of Nigeria.
The discovery was made in Isong Inyang Community in Akamkpa Local Government Area following credible intelligence reports received by the Nigeria Police Force. Officers were immediately deployed to the scene along the busy Calabar–Ikom Highway, where the suspected illegal embalmment centre was located.
According to police sources, the facility was allegedly operating without proper authorisation. Upon inspection, officers found eight dried and decomposed corpses stored inside the building under questionable conditions. The situation reportedly caused panic among residents who had initially feared possible links to ritual activities or criminal networks before authorities clarified the circumstances.
One suspect, identified as a mortician said to be connected to a private mortuary service in Akamkpa, has been taken into custody for questioning. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine whether the bodies were unlawfully obtained, improperly stored, or connected to any criminal activity. Authorities are also working to identify the deceased and notify their families where possible.
The police spokesperson in the state confirmed that the command acted swiftly after receiving actionable intelligence. He assured members of the public that there was no immediate evidence suggesting ritual killings but emphasised that a thorough investigation would be conducted to establish the full facts of the case.
The incident has reignited conversations around regulation and monitoring of private mortuary facilities in parts of Nigeria. Many residents in nearby communities expressed concern about how such a facility could operate unnoticed for an extended period.
Community leaders in Akamkpa have called for stricter oversight of health-related establishments. They also want routine inspections to prevent similar occurrences in the future. They also urged the government to strengthen enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with existing public health and safety regulations.
As investigations continue, security presence has reportedly been heightened in parts of the local government area to maintain calm and prevent misinformation from spreading. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course.
This development adds to the growing list of enforcement actions. These actions target illegal operations in the southern region. Law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to clamp down on unlawful practices threatening public safety and community trust.
