Understand the tinted glass permit and its implications after a recent High Court order in Delta State.
A High Court sitting in Orerokpe, Delta State, has issued a restraining order. The order concerns the implementation of the tinted glass permit. This permit was ordered by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin explained that this followed a suit filed by several individuals. These individuals include Kunle Edun SAN, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, and E Onoriode. Others are SC Okporgu, TL Diogboghie, and AH Okifo. Also included are Sir FO Yekovie and JK Ezugwu.
He said, “On 15th December 2025, the Nigeria Police Force announced the resumption of enforcement. This pertains to the Tinted Glass Permit policy. This policy is to take effect from 2nd January 2026. The enforcement is in furtherance of its responsibility for public safety and internal security.
“Yet, after this announcement, the Nigeria Police Force was therefore served with an interim order of court in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025. It was issued on 17th December 2025. The order restrains the Force from proceeding with the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy. This will remain pending until the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or the vacation of the order.
“The Nigeria Police Force has acted after constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority. It has entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.
“The High Court has adjourned the case until 20th January 2026 for proceedings.
“The Nigeria Police Force has therefore placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide. This decision is in strict compliance with the subsisting court order. The hold will remain pending the court’s decision.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute. They uphold the rule of law while discharging their primary mandate of protecting lives and property.
“The Nigeria Police Force has made a promise. They will continue to deploy lawful, intelligence-driven strategies. Their goal is to address security challenges. They aim to safeguard public safety across the country.
“Members of the Nigerian public are assured that the Nigerian Police will communicate further developments. The police will issue clear guidance as appropriate following the court’s determination of the matter. This is in the overriding interest of public order and national security.”
