Reason for the Urhobo Spelling Bee for Secondary Schools in Urhobo Land?
This initiative is organized by my office. I serve as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Community Development to the Governor of Delta State. In my role as U3 Youth Leader, the aim is to enhance the use of the Urhobo language. This also includes promoting it across secondary schools in Urhobo land.
The transmission of our rich Urhobo culture and traditions—especially our unique language—is essential. The Urhobo are the 5th largest ethnic nationality in Nigeria. Efforts must be made to encourage the teaching and usage of the Urhobo language, particularly in public schools.
The Urhobo language is the mother tongue of every indigene of Delta Central by origin. This includes those both at home and in the diaspora. It must be embraced as a necessity. It should also be actively promoted.
In view of this, it is imperative to organize initiatives such as the Urhobo Spelling Bee. These events instill in our children a strong passion for learning the Urhobo language. They encourage speaking, reading, and writing in Urhobo.
