Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is recovering in hospital after a serious car accident on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives.

On Monday as former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria. This tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, Ogun State, according to local authorities.

Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle collided with a truck. According to early reports, the SUV may have been moving at high speed and lost control during an overtaking maneuver. Two passengers in the car were killed instantly, while Joshua and at least one other person sustained injuries.

Immediately, emergency teams rushed to the scene. Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in the accident while being transported to a nearby hospital. Officials have confirmed that he is in stable condition and recovering from minor injuries.

Authorities indicate that the two people who died were close associates of Joshua. Although their full identities have not yet been confirmed, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly offered condolences to the families affected and wished Joshua a speedy recovery.

This accident comes shortly after Anthony’s recent victory over Jake Paul, demonstrating Joshua’s resilience. This event occurred on December 19, 2025, in Miami. Following that fight, he had been in Nigeria, engaging with fans and attending events in the local boxing community.

Meanwhile, police and traffic officials have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Initial reports suggest that speeding and risky overtaking may have contributed. Authorities remind drivers to prioritize safety on high-traffic roads.

Despite the accident, Anthony Joshua remains one of the most prominent names in modern heavyweight boxing. Furthermore, fans have flooded social media with messages of support, wishing the champion a full recovery.
