UEFA Champions League league phase

The UEFA Champions League league phase has officially concluded. This brings an end to the newest format’s opening chapter. It sets the stage for a thrilling run into the knockout rounds. After eight matchdays of intense European action, clubs across the continent have fiercely competed for every point. The final standings now determine who advances to the next phase of the competition.

Top Eight Secure Round of 16 Spots

The eight teams that finished in the top eight positions of the 36-team league phase automatically qualify for the Round of 16. This is due to the new league structure. They gain this privilege due to their performance. They no longer play additional qualifiers. This reward reflects consistently strong performances across multiple fixtures. It guarantees these teams a smoother path into the heart of the tournament.

Among the standout performers, Arsenal captured global headlines. They completed the league phase with a perfect record. They won every game and topped the table. Their impressive run has made them one of the favourites as the competition shifts into its knockout stages.

(Exact top-eight league phase standings are pending formal validation by UEFA but will decide the final direct qualifiers.)

Knockout Phase Play-Offs (Teams 9–24)

Teams that finished 9th to 24th in the league phase, enter knockout play-offs to earn their place in the Round of 16. These ties are played over two legs in February:

  • 17–18 February 2026 — first leg
  • 24–25 February 2026 — second leg

The draw pairs seeded clubs (9th–16th) with unseeded clubs (17th–24th). The seeded teams will typically play the second leg at home.

Seeded play-off teams include:

  • Real Madrid
  • Inter Milan
  • Paris Saint-Germain
  • Newcastle United
  • Juventus
  • Atletico Madrid
  • Atalanta
  • Bayer Leverkusen

Unseeded play-off teams include:

  • Borussia Dortmund
  • Olympiacos
  • Club Brugge
  • Galatasaray
  • Monaco
  • Qarabag
  • Bodo/Glimt
  • Benfica

The play-off draw on 30 January 2026, will produce several key ties that could shape the Round of 16 matchups. Unlike the group stage era, teams can face opponents from their domestic leagues. They may also encounter teams they’ve already played once the knockouts begin.

This season’s new format has increased both the number of competitive matches and the complexity of qualification. Clubs now must maintain consistency over a longer league phase rather than relying solely on the traditional group format. The result is more meaningful games, more dramatic storylines, and a knockout round packed with intrigue.
