Bashir criticized the ICPC in his post, calling the detention unlawful and thanking supporters for standing by. The International Centre for Investigative Reporting also noted that the ICPC confirmed El-Rufai is in custody. They have not shared details about the investigation.

Earlier on Friday, before news of his release, his mother, Umma, died in Cairo, Egypt (Ekele & Egobiambu, 2026). So far, neither the ICPC nor the family has said whether her passing affected the timing of his release.
