Nigerian Airlines face possible flight suspensions due to soaring jet fuel prices. Discover the implications for travellers in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON) warn that all flights across the country may be suspended from April 20, 2026, due to unsustainable increases in jet fuel prices.
In an April 14 letter to the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), AON reported that aviation fuel prices rose from ₦900 per litre on February 28 to ₦3,300 per litre, representing an increase of over 300 percent in a few weeks. AON described the hike as “artificial” and significantly above global prices, noting that crude oil prices increased by only about 30 percent during the same period.
AON stated that airlines have absorbed additional fuel costs “out of patriotism,” but declining earnings now make continued operations unsustainable. One airline suspended flights on March 13, and others may do the same if prices remain elevated.
The operators warned that this crisis endangers the aviation industry, the broader economy, and national security. They cautioned that higher ticket prices could reduce demand, while suspended flights may result in job losses, impact banks, and exacerbate security concerns.
The letter, also sent to senior government officials, urges MEMAN to align jet fuel prices with international standards. AON warns that if current trends persist, all Nigerian airlines will suspend operations from April 20, 2026.
