TERRORISTS KILL 34 FASTING MUSLIMS IN LATEST KEBBI ATTACK

Fresh tragedy has struck Kebbi State after suspected terrorists reportedly killed at least 34 fasting Muslims in a coordinated assault on rural communities. The attack, which occurred in the Arewa Local Government Area, has once again highlighted the growing insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest region.

According to local sources, gunmen stormed multiple villages during the fasting period, opening fire on residents and setting parts of the communities ablaze. Survivors described scenes of panic as families fled into nearby bushes to escape the attackers. Several homes were destroyed, and livestock were reportedly rustled during the raid.

Security sources have linked the attack to the Lakurawa group, an armed network believed to operate across forest corridors in parts of Kebbi and neighbouring states. The group has been accused of carrying out repeated raids, extortion, and cattle theft in vulnerable rural communities. While investigations are ongoing, the scale and coordination of the latest assault suggest a well-planned operation.

The Nigerian Army, alongside other security agencies, has reportedly deployed personnel to the affected areas to restore order and pursue the attackers. However, residents say response time remains a major concern, especially in remote villages where state presence is limited.

Northwest Nigeria has continued to battle violent attacks linked to banditry and insurgent-style operations. Despite repeated military offensives, armed groups still exploit difficult terrain, porous borders, and weak local intelligence structures to launch deadly strikes.

This latest massacre adds to mounting pressure on authorities in Nigeria to strengthen rural security architecture and improve intelligence coordination. For grieving families in Kebbi, however, the focus is immediate survival and mourning loved ones lost during a sacred period of fasting.

As investigations continue, many Nigerians are asking the same question again — how many more lives must be lost before lasting security reforms take hold?
