
Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40 after a reported battle with cancer
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning. This follows reports that popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40.
According to multiple reports circulating on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the actor reportedly passed away after battling cancer privately for months. Furthermore, reports claimed he died in Lagos. However, official statements from his family were still limited as of the time this report was filed.
Alexx Ekubo, whose full name was Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, became one of Nollywood’s most recognised actors through his roles in romantic dramas, comedy films, and blockbuster productions. Also, fans across Nigeria and beyond admired him for his charisma, fashion sense, and strong screen presence.
News of his death quickly spread across social media, where celebrities, colleagues, and supporters expressed shock and sadness.
Popular actress Funke Akindele shared an emotional tribute, remembering the late actor as a close friend. Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned him online, while several other Nollywood stars posted condolence messages and photos in his honour.
Many fans noted that Alex Ekubo had remained away from social media and public events for a long period. This had already sparked concerns about his health months earlier.
Born on April 10, 1986, Alex Ekubo rose to fame after emerging as the first runner-up at the Mr. Nigeria 2010 competition. He later built a successful acting career and featured in numerous Nollywood movies. These included “Weekend Getaway,” “The Bling Lagosians,” “Power of 1,” and “Omo Ghetto: The Saga.”
Beyond acting, he was also known for his humanitarian activities, brand influence, and strong fan connection online.
His reported death has left many Nigerians devastated, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the entertainment industry.
