Court grants El-Rufai ₦100m bail

Court grants El-Rufai ₦100 million bail. Conditions include a surety with specific qualifications and documentation requirements.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai bail set at ₦100 million. This follows his arraignment on alleged national security breach charges.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the bail ruling on Monday. She outlined strict conditions that El-Rufai must meet before the bail is granted.

The court required the surety, who must guarantee the ₦100 million bail, to reside in Maitama or Asokoro, Abuja. Moreover, the surety must provide the original Certificate of Occupancy for a landed property to be held by the court registry.

The surety must also be a federal civil servant of at least Grade Level 17. In addition, the surety must provide salary records for the past three months. The surety must also submit an affidavit of means, a recent passport photograph, and a verified tax clearance certificate.

As part of the bail terms, El-Rufai must surrender all valid international passports to the court. Furthermore, he must report monthly to the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters until the court issues its final decision.

The DSS is prosecuting El-Rufai on five amended counts related to the alleged illegal interception of communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. El-Rufai denied all charges during the arraignment.

The court rejected the defence’s motion to dismiss the amended charges and ordered an accelerated hearing.
