The Coalition of Udu Civil Society Groups suspends protests after a pivotal meeting with Rt. Hon. (Revd) Francis Ejiroghene Waive.
On the 30th of July, the Coalition of Udu Civil Society Groups announced the suspension of all protests in Udu Local Government Area. This resolution followed a strategic meeting with the Member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Revd. Francis Ejiroghene Waive, held at his constituency office.
The meeting brought well-known civil society leaders, highlighting civil society groups’ focus on recent government interventions in Udu and the need to support ongoing developmental efforts pioneered by the Delta State Government under the leadership of Governor Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the coalition acknowledged Oborevwori’s numerous appointments of Udu indigenes to key political positions, including Commissioner, Special Adviser, and over thirty other roles. They also praised the state government for executing critical infrastructural projects within the LGA.
The communiqué was signed by 18 civil society leaders, including-
- Goodluck Mukoro,
- Clement Akaba,
- Temple Eteyera,
- Romeo Olakpa, and others.
Projects that were highlighted among the projects are the
- Udu Modern Market,
- Opete–Okpaka Road to the river,
- Bezi Road in Aladja,
- CAC Road in Orhuwhorun,
- Orhuwhorun–Usiefrun–Ekrokpe Road.
Additionally, they may have noticed the recent award for the Gbogidi Road and Aladja–Ogbejoh Road projects, enhancing civil society group interests in the area.
The coalition also commended the Governor for approving an overhead bridge in Ughelli within the federal constituency, expressing hope that a similar structure will soon be constructed at the Udu Express Junction. Furthermore, gratitude was extended for the state’s support in the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ovwian—a project facilitated by Revd. Francis Waive.
“We will continue to engage His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration with respect, dialogue, and cooperation. We are in a political era, and we affirm that activism and militancy no longer yield sustainable benefits for communities,” the statement read by various civil society groups.
As a sign of goodwill, the coalition announced an immediate end to all protests in the area, pledging their support for Governor Oborevwori’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections. They also reaffirmed their loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Hon. Revd. Francis Waive, who they credited for bringing federal presence to Udu.
This development marks a turning point in the relationship between the state government and Udu stakeholders, with civil society groups driving a renewed focus on partnership for development and political stability.
