Goodluck Jonathan aims for the presidency in 2027 with the PDP. Explore stakeholder reactions and implications for his legacy.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has announced his intention to seek the presidency in 2027 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.

A senior member of Jonathan’s team confirmed that, after extensive deliberations, they determined the PDP offers the best opportunity for him to reclaim leadership. Moreover, the party will allow him to address worsening poverty and hardship.

The announcement has prompted mixed reactions. Some support Jonathan’s constitutional right to run. However, others caution that his candidacy could affect his legacy, given current political challenges.

Respondents include Afenifere, the Middle Belt Forum, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, the Christian Association of Nigeria, APGA founder Chief Chekwa Okorie, and former adviser Akin Osuntokun. This range reflects broad stakeholder engagement.

Jonathan’s confirmation of the PDP as his platform prompted support groups to compete to purchase his ₦100 million nomination form. Insiders report these groups are working to secure the form before submissions close tomorrow.

Key organisations supporting Jonathan include the Coalition for Jonathan, the Goodies Movement, The New Nigeria (TNN), the Almajiri Network, Arewa for Good Governance, Northern Youth Alliance, and other northern coalitions. Furthermore, the coalition has reportedly pledged to raise the ₦100 million required.

Urhobo Daily learned that although Jonathan initially told his supporters he would consult widely before making a final decision, he had already resolved to run. He now aims to convince Nigerians to re-elect him to revive the economy and ease hardship.

Dr Tom Ohikere, a support group leader, urged Jonathan to obtain the nomination form promptly, emphasising that he should contest under any party he chooses. Meanwhile, the diaspora-based Goodluckan Movement maintains it should purchase the form. This group claims to represent Nigerians globally more effectively than the northern groups currently seeking the honour.
