Tinubu signs Amended Electoral Act 2026
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed the Amended Electoral Act 2026 into law. This marks a significant development in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The signing ceremony took place in Abuja shortly after the National Assembly passed the amendment bill. The revised law introduces fresh provisions aimed at strengthening the electoral system. Moreover, it addresses some of the controversies that surrounded previous elections.
One of the major talking points during the amendment process was the issue of electronic transmission of results. Lawmakers debated the scope of real-time result uploads and the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission in deploying technology during elections. Consequently, the final version of the law is expected to clarify operational procedures. It also takes into account technological and security concerns.
The amendment comes at a crucial time as INEC has already begun preparations for the 2027 polls. Political parties, civil society organisations, and election observers are expected to carefully study the new provisions. They want to understand how these provisions may affect party primaries, voter accreditation, result collation, and dispute resolution.
Supporters of the amendment say it will enhance transparency and reduce legal loopholes. However, critics argue that some reforms did not go far enough, especially regarding mandatory electronic transmission of results from polling units.
With the new Electoral Act now in force, attention shifts to how effectively it will be implemented. The public wonders whether it will restore confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system as the country heads toward another major political cycle.
